A MAN died instantly after the van he was driving collided head-on with a truck at Nalovo, Nadi, on Monday night.
Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed the passengers of the truck, along with its driver, were treated at hospital and sent home.
"The deceased was driving a 15-seater van. Luckily, the driver of the truck and the three passengers did not suffer serious injury," he said.
"Investigation into the accident is ongoing to identify the cause of accident."
The road death toll now stands at 13 compared to 11 for the same time last year.
Insp Sokomuri is calling on drivers and road users to always take precautions while on the road.
He said road accidents could be prevented if pedestrians and drivers followed simple road rules.
"Some accidents do occur because people fail to take heed of the basic road rules," Insp Sokomuri said.
"People have been reminded of the importance of road safety and yet they seem to break the rules resulting in accidents."
He said members of the public were requested to play an active role in the promotion of road safety in Fiji.
Insp Sokomuri is also calling on all parents to always supervise their children during this two weeks school holidays.
