No mercy on corruption

THE government will not tolerate any act of corruption.

That message was passed on to village headmen and district representatives in Macuata yesterday.

The media liaison officer for the Strategic Framework for Change and Co-ordinating office, Kisoko Cagituevei, said they had received calls from the province against people who had misused funds earmarked for village development projects.

"This is very common with village headmen as they are the eyes and ears of development in their communities," Mr Cagituevei said.

"Minor development projects do take place in villages by companies and the money received is often unknown to most villagers.

"In some cases, village headmen use it without informing people."

Mr Cagituevei said it was crucial for village headmen and district representatives to be transparent in their line of work because the villagers depended on them.

"That is why it is very important for people to come together so they're well aware of what is happening around them."
