THE Macuata Day celebration which is earmarked for this week in Labasa is aiming to unite the people of Caumatalevu.

Roko Tui Macuata Sitiveni Lalibuli said apart from collecting provincial levies, the objective behind such an annual event was to strengthen ties and relationships among the people in the province.

"Promoting the Macuata dialect and enabling its people to hold on to their traditional values and culture will be a priority at the two-day event," he said.

"This is also a time when we remind the children of this province to treasure their true identity as most of them are slowly losing their culture because of modernisation. We are also expecting the Macuata people in other parts of the country and abroad to be part of this annual event."

Mr Lalibuli said the Macuata Provincial Council meeting would start on Wednesday to coincide with Macuata Day.

The celebration will feature food and display of handicrafts by the women and also traditional meke and other entertainment performed by youths and children .

The celebration will be held at the Katonivere grounds.
