Drill competition to keep firefighters alert

LABASA firefighters yesterday took part in a drill competition as part of efforts to improve their services.

The competition was also aligned to the National Fire Authority's 2012 work plan to test the officers' knowledge and skills.

North fire officer John Pillay said the initiative was basically focused on groom officers to be efficient and reliable.

"This competition is something we do every year to test the level of knowledge and skills of these officers," Mr Pillay said.

"Three groups competed today and the winner will represent us at the divisional drill competition which is set to be held here at the Labasa station later in the year.

"We are working towards providing quality and better services for the sake of living in a fire-free division."

Mr Pillay said the amount of fire calls received by the three stations in Savusavu, Taveuni and Labasa had improved this year.

"We haven't really received a lot of fire calls this year and it is because people are taking heed of our awareness programs and advice.

"Our officers are also hard at work as they reach out to schools, villages, settlements and business houses to create awareness of fire safety," Mr Pillay said.
