THE government's decision to run with 100 Sands Limited to operate the country's first casino on Denarau Island in Nadi was made after careful consideration.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the company was mindful of indigenous customs and traditions.

"Government identified the company as the appropriate entity to run the casino because of, among other things, the company's close ties with the Snoqualmie Native American tribe in Washington State," he said.

"This tribe has demonstrated its ability to operate a casino within the parameters of tribal living, customs, and protection of the vulnerable, something that we Fijians aspire to for our local casino gaming industry."
