AIRLINES carried a total of 182,456 international passengers for the December 2011 quarter.

Compared to the September quarter, the airlines transported 1.9 per cent more passengers but recorded a 1.4 per cent reduction in revenue passenger kilometres.

A paying passenger flying one kilometre creates one revenue passenger kilometre, the Fiji Bureau of Statistics explained.

When compared to the December 2010 quarter, the airlines transported 1.2 per cent more passengers but recorded a 20 per cent reduction in revenue passenger kilometres.

In terms of capacity, the bureau said a 15.9 per cent decline was recorded.

Local airlines carried a total of 61,246 passengers on domestic flights and generated 8875 passenger revenue kilometres.
