Cabbies ask State for rebates

THE Fiji Taxi Association has called on government to give further rebates on new taxis and vehicle parts after it was announced on Saturday the price of fuel would be increasing.

Association president Vincent Singh said they could not do much as they had signed an agreement with government on taxi fare increases.

"This is really one of those things that the government has no control over, one day the price could be a certain amount and the next it will be different," Mr Singh said.

He said cabbies could no longer pass on the added cost to customers as per the initial taxi fare increase agreement the association had signed last year.

"From our side, we have already signed an agreement with government for fare increases, this agreement states that we cannot ask for a fare increase for the next few years."

He said rebates would greatly help the association and its members maintain their costs.

"We are just crossing our fingers now and hoping that there will be more rebates for us so that we can meet our costs."

The new price of fuel was announced by Attorney-General and Minister for Commerce Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Prices increased across the board yesterday with motor spirits experiencing an increase of $0.13 cents from $2.48 per litre to $2.61 per litre.

Premix prices increased from $2.40 per litre to $2.53 per litre, kerosene increased from $1.82 per litre to $1.84 per litre while diesel increased from $2.25 per litre to $2.31 per litre.
