Nadi rugby on hold

THE Nadi Rugby Union has postponed its 2012 local league competition indefinitely.

This is due to the recent floods that hit the country last week.

NRU games committee chairman Jeff Tamata said their concern was the status of Prince Charles Park.

He said their main venue was not in the state to host matches.

"Nadi has suffered a lot of damage," Tamata said.

"Prince Charles Park is not in a state to host any games. The enclosure has been washed away in some parts. The ticket booth is no longer there."

"There seems to be a lot of silt on the turf itself. For this reason we have decided to postpone all club matches. We do not have a suitable venue. The Ratu Navula Secondary School grounds were also under flood waters."

Nadi is scheduled to host Tavua in the third round of the Digicel Cup this weekend. The Jetsetters lost to Tailevu 25-16 in the opening round a fortnight ago. The second round was postponed due to the flooding last week.

Nadi coach Iliesa Tanivula said many of their players would face a lot of problems turning up for training for the next couple of fixtures.

He said training would resume tomorrow (Monday).

"The training will be at the Airports Fiji Limited (AFL) grounds in Namaka from 5pm," Tanivula said.

"I'm hopeful that players will be able to participate in the training. It will certainly be difficult for us as many of the players have been affected by the floods."

"They have not been able to train. Our main training venue has been affected. But we will try and get as many players as possible back. Tavua may seem to be a minor team but they will certainly prove strong."

In round three Lautoka will host Northland, Tailevu will travel to Suva, Macuata will host champions Nadroga, Ovalau will travel to Ratu Cakobau to play Naitasiri while Vatukoula will host Rewa.
