Dad rapes son

Shalveen Chand
Thursday, July 07, 2011

A 70-YEAR-OLD man pleaded guilty to raping his 15-year-old son.

The man, who has been in remand, told the High Court in Suva he was changing his plea to guilty.

Legal Aid counsel Seremaia Waqanibete said the man's application for representation by the Legal Aid was rejected but Legal Aid would act as duty solicitors.

He said the man had informed them of his intention to plead guilty to the rape charge.

Justice Salesi Temo asked the man if he had $10,000 to hire a private lawyer, to which the man said no. He said he was going to represent himself.

The man, from Naitasiri, admitted raping his 15-year-old son last December when nobody was home.

He told the court he understood the charge and was taking the guilty plea on his own accord.

The State prosecution was told to file summary of facts and sentencing submissions today.

The Legal Aid will present the man's mitigation in court today.
