NADI-based boxer Fatu Tuimanono has set his sights on becoming Fiji's cruiserweight champion.

Lau native Tuimanono is 40 and he must beat Sefanaia 'Survivor' Vakacegu in an elimination bout of the program by Lale's Promotions on April 2.

Tuimanono is training under the guidance of former Fiji champion Vereniki Raiwalui.

"This is an important fight for me. The winner gets a title shot, I'm keen to win the title and this is a good chance for me," he said. "My preparation is going good. Though I'm coming back after a one-year lay-off I never stopped training."

This will be the first meeting between Tuimanono and Vakacegu. Tuimanono turned professional in 1999 and his record includes eight wins, 10 losses and a draw. Vakacegu has featured in 19 fights. He has recorded seven wins and 12 losses. "I'm anticipating a tough fight. My focus is on speed and improving my style," Tuimanono said. Other hopefuls for the Fiji cruiserweight title include Sunia Cama Junior and Simione Tui of Navosa.

Former South Seas light welterweight title holder Raiwalui is also training Serea Naitasiri boxer Waisale 'The Gentleman' Ratu, who faces Johnny Singh in a 6x3min contest. "I'm looking forward to a good fight. I've been sparring with Fatu (Tuimanono) as we both train with Vereniki and I'm pleased with the work I've done so far," said Ratu.

Eight professional fights will be part of the program on April 2. Promoter Usman Ali is putting together a five and half hour program that will include wrestling and women's boxing.

Fiji welterweight champion Opeti Tagi will defend his title against Junior 'The Razor' Farzan Ali in the main bout while Joy 'The Jet' Ali will defend the Fiji light middleweight title against Tevita Vakalalabure in the main supporting bout.
