MALES dominate the three local news medium in terms of news subject.
This was a key finding of monitoring conducted in the mainstream media organisations in Fiji as part of the Global Media Monitoring Project 2010.
In monitoring Fiji's media, the Fiji Media Watch discovered males were dominant or were represented in more than half of news story topics.
This confirmed to monitors that there was a high representation of males than females in the news.
There were also more male representation than females on the position or occupation of females and male news subjects.
In terms of news delivery, males were said to be dominant in the news stories presentation and in both areas of radio and television as news announcers.
Female reporters dominated in areas where women were the central focus of their stories.
Results for Fiji further showed that stories where stereotypes were challenged included crime and violence, science and health, celebrity, arts, media and sports, social and legal and economy.
Two newspaper companies including The Fiji Times, two radio stations and Fiji Television were selected for the local monitoring process after they were identified as being the mainstream media industries in Fiji.
Since its inception in 1995 Fiji has been a participant in the GMMP which is an initiative of the World Association of Christian Communications.
