JITEN Prasad of Nausori Club has taken the number one spot in the Super Premier division after the first snooker National Rankings Championship in Lautoka.

Prasad, a former Tailevu Naitasiri soccer player, proved to be the surprise package of the two-day event.

He defeated Philip Gock, David Reddy, Viliame Umu and Suresh Chauhan to reach the final.

In the final Prasad went 3-0 up before Yogen Prasad made a comeback to tie the fixture.

Prasad bounced back in the seventh frame to seal victory.

Prasad has earned 94 points with his wins. This includes eight points for an upset.

Yogen is in second position with 72 points.

Veteran Chauhan who made an upset beating last year's number one Deepak Jai Ram is ranked third with 41 points.

Mahen Deo of Nadi is on fourth spot with 41 points while Umu is on fifth position with 28 points.

Last year's top three failed to grab a spot in the top five.

Ram and last year's number two Praneel are in sixth and seventh spot respectively with 27 points.

Last years number three Nitesh Chand of Lautoka Club has dropped down to 16th position.

In the Premier division, Nestle Fiji merchandiser Vinesh Prasad is the number one.

He beat Ravinesh Naidu in the final. Vinesh has 74 points and is ahead of Naidu by 27 points.

Navneil Maharaj is in third spot with 30 points followed by Ajesh Chand on 24 points.

Billiards and Snooker Association of Fiji vice president Timoci Gaunavinaka said they had adopted a new points and ranking system this year.

He said the system was designed to give bonus points for major upsets and for those making over century breaks.

Gaunavinaka said penalties were also dished out for various offences and misbehaviour.

Chand, in the Premier division, had five points docked for not failing to referee or organising a referee approved by the organisers.
