New room for HIV

Theresa Ralogaivau
Saturday, July 31, 2010

A SPECIAL room has been opened at the Labasa Hospital for the care of HIV expectant mothers.

The unmarked, nondescript room is used by expectant mothers for ante-natal purposes, masking its purpose as a counselling room for HIV mums-to-be.

Consultant paediatrician Dr Ilisapeci Vereti said the room signifies a step forward for the hospital.

The move signified confidence where the privacy of persons living with HIV or intending to undergo HIV testing is concerned, so much so they feel protected.

There is a similar room at the CWM Hospital and this one is the first for the north.

Obstetrics and gynaecology consultant Dr Inosi Voce said the room was especially assigned for couples to discuss HIV issues with doctors.

"It's not marked. It's away from the public eye."
