Starmers says: "What a thoroughbred Pesamino is - perhaps he's after Vilimoni Delasau's record of 16 tries in one tournament.."

FIJI walloped Papua New Guinea 41-0 and Kenya accounted for Wales 19-5 in the second round of Pool C fixtures at the Adelaide 7s.

To keep its chances alive for the Cup quarter-final stages Fiji must beat Kenya.

Hypothetically Wales which upset Fiji yesterday will cruise past PNG in the deciding round of pool games.

Barring an upset win by the Waisae Serevi coached PNG Kumals over the Welsh, the Fiji side  must not only win against Kenya tonight. Tanivula's men must do so with a respectable score line to qualify as one the top two finishers in the pool .

Latest buzz: England and Fiji rekindled their hopes of reaching the last eight with victories against Niue and PNG. Mikaele Pesamino scorched over for five tries in Samoa's win against Japan to become the tournament's leading try scorer with seven.

Sampie Mastriet scored two in South Africa's second win against France and there were also double pool wins for Kenya and New Zealand.

Pool A

World Series leaders New Zealand scored five tries in a comfortable opening 31-0 win against Scotland and followed up with a 26-0 win against Tonga to reach the Cup quarters.

It was far tougher for Argentina, though, who needed all 14 minutes to beat danger team Tonga 19-17 on day one with Joaquin Todeschini's last-gasp conversion and then overcame Scotland 14-7 first up on the day two, Diego Palma scoring both their tries.

Pool B

Last month's USA Sevens champions Samoa won their first match against France on day one and then followed up with a convincing win against Japan. Mikaele Pesamino scored twice against France and then five against the Japanese to leap to the top of the try-scoring list.

Nineteen-year-old Sampie Mastriet is the second highest scorer for South Africa, who also won their first two matches to reach the Cup quarters. The Sevens newcomer scored a hat trick of tries on debut for the reigning World Series and Adelaide champions against Japan on day one, and bagged two more in a convincing 38-0 win against France.

Pool C

Wales caused the first upset of the Adelaide event by beating Wellington champions Fiji 17-12. The Fijians led 12-0 early on but tries by Justin Tipuric, Chris Morgan and Darren Daniel clawed it back for Wales as the Fijians were punished for indiscipline with Osea Kolinisau's sin-binning.

Wales came up short, though, against last year's Adelaide Cup runners-up Kenya but can still qualify for the Cup quarters if the Fijians lose against the Africans.

Kenya started on Friday night with a 27-7 win against PNG, Innocent Simiyu and captain Humphrey Kayange each scoring twice.

Pool D

USA won a superb opening victory against England. Paul Emerick was in outstanding form as captain Kevin Swiryn scored twice and Matt Hawkins and Nick Edwards one apiece in a 24-21 win for the Americans. Hosts Australia face an opening tie against Niue.

Hosts Australia then overwhelmed Niue 40-5 in the final match of the day, Kimami Sitauti and Ed Stubbs each scoring two tries.

So far this season there have already been three Cup champions. New Zealand lead the World Series by 14 points thanks to their two opening victories in Dubai and George, but Fiji won in Wellington and Samoa's win in Las Vegas last time out has taken them to up to second place.
