POLICE officers have been called in to be on standby this weekend following an alert of two tropical depressions heading towards Fiji.
And police have warned people to take weather warnings seriously and secure their homes.
Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said it was important for people to closely monitor weather bulletins and act as advised.
He stressed that this was especially important for people living in low-lying areas. He warned people in the Northern Division to take extra precautions with the cyclone heading towards them.
"In the past, some people remained in their homes despite being told by DISMAC officials and the weather office to move to higher ground because of flash floods," he said.
"As a result they put the lives of the rescue teams at risk. We are asking them to, please, just follow simple instructions and move to higher ground," he said.
Mr Sokomuri said police and officials of the national disaster team had in the past worked in unsafe conditions during natural disasters to rescue families stranded in flooded areas.
"With the warning for this weekend, we ask members of the public to work with us," he said. "Police officers will also monitor the situation and assist DISMAC in the North."
