Update: 11:18PM DISMAC officials in the Northern Division are in constant contact with rural outposts and health centres as Cyclone Tomas approaches.
Divisional Planning Officer Northern, Ratu Eliki Tikoidraubuta, said officers would monitor the situation in remote areas throughout the night.
On its current track and traveling at six knots, Tomas is not expected to affect the Northern Division until early tomorrow.
At that time, Cikobia Island, Udu and thenortheastern parts of Vanua Levu should expect strong winds, heavy rain and high seas.
Ratu Eliki said officials were in constant contact with nursing stations and health centres on outer islands.
These centres have phone or radio telephone links with Labasa.
DISMAC offices have been set up in Labasa, Savusavu, Taveuni, Saqani, Nabouwalu and Seaqaqa.
These offices have skeleton staff but the staffing levels will change when the need arises.
The first DISMAC North shift started at 5pm yesterday and changed at midnight.
