SUPERMARKETS in Suva, Tailevu and Ovalau have started rationing sugar as a result of a shortage.
The supermarkets are offering customers only two-kilogram and four-kilogram packs.
Some supermarkets confirmed they had stopped selling 50-kg bags.
The managers said the decision would ensure they had enough in stock to cater for demand in the coming weeks.
One of the two supermarkets in Levuka that supplies 27 villages on Ovalau has also had to ration supply.
Kishore Investment manager Nemani Rasea said the store only had 15 50-kg bags in stock.
Mr Rasea said the shop normally buys up to 70 50-kg bags a week.
"We'll only sell one-kg bags," he said.
Tailevu supermarket official Daud Musa confirmed they too were rationing supply.
Other supermarkets that confirmed a shortage are: J Santa Ram Supermarket, Naurosi's Lokia Shopping Centre, MH wholesalers, Kundan Singh, Food 4 Less and Hansons in Nasinu.
