SHELVIN Shonal Prakash left home as usual at 7am yesterday not knowing it would be his last goodbye to his family.
The 21-year-old died instantly yesterday afternoon when he was electrocuted while trying to unload scrap metal into a yard at Namoli in Lautoka.
According to witnesses near the scene of the accident, the deceased had just entered the yard to offload a sack of scrap metal.
"He (Shelvin) came in a truck filled with sacks of scrap metal and got off to unload the sack into the yard. He began controlling the crane by operating the lever which is behind the cab of the truck. The crane rose too high and hit the electric wires above it," said Shalen.
Upon noticing that the crane stopped moving after it hit the wires, the workers rushed to check on Shelvin.
"He was slumped over the lever of the truck and there was no movement from him. We knew he was dead then," he said.
Workers later called the police who removed the his lifeless body after Fiji Electricity Authority employees moved the crane away from the live wire.
At Field 40 last night, Shiu Shankar's home was filled with relatives who turned up to console Shelvin's grieving parents and young wife.
"My son was a very friendly and kind-hearted boy. He only married last year and was always eager to learn new things. He was very keen on becoming a mechanic and learnt all he could from me," said his distraught father who owns a tyre business.
"Last night (Wednesday) I dreamt that I was falling into a river but I didn't know that it was my only son I was going to lose."
Shelvin is survived by his wife, parents and sisters.
Police investigation is continuing.
