Landowners debunk farm myth 2

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Just a few metres away from Jokatama Rarasea, another farmer is earning his living from cane.

Alivereti Vatakaya, originally from Tavuya in Rewa, was fortunate that his wife Lanieta Nasegaya was one of the landowners in Vesaru.

Mr Vatakaya started farming in 2001.

With very little hope, Mr Vatakaya was given a fresh start when he received $10,000 from the Ministry of Agriculture.

He built a farm house and laboured on his six-acre cane farm. Last year, he harvested 92 tonnes of cane. And he is aiming for more this year.

Mr Vatakaya's two grown up sons are helping him on the farm.
