I'll retire

Mereseini Marau
Thursday, February 11, 2010

ARMY Commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has announced he will retire in 2014.

Speaking at Dawadamu, Nanukuloa, Ra, Commodore Bainimarama at the same time called on villagers to support the government that will come into power in 2014 in the same manner he was received yesterday.

Recalling how the military was stopped from entering the province two years ago, he said he was glad that Ra had changed its stance and expressed supportfor him.

The military, he added, would ensure there was no repeat of the 2000 mutiny where innocent soldiers were killed.

He said the clean-up campaign had been planned immediately after the events of 2000 and not devised after 2006.

He promised the State would help with infrastructural development in the province but not for the construction of churches.

There would be no hand-outs, he told them.

Earlier at Namarai Village, Commodore Bainimarama said the tour of the province was not a vote-buying exercise.

He said the visit was conducted in his position as head of government as he wanted to hear directly from the people.

He said he also wanted to inspect for himself projects his government had undertaken.

Commodore Baini-marama also visited the district of Tokaimalo accompanied by government officials and senior military officers.
