5s reps named for national trials

Friday, January 15, 2010

FIJI five-a-side soccer captain Kamal Hassan is one of six surviving members of last year's team named in the 48-member squad to attend trials for the 2010 Oceania Futsal Championship.

Hassan will team up with Sandeep Nair, Joseph Mishra, Simione Tamanisau, Aisea Codro and Dinesh Mudaliar -- who were part of the team that finished second behind Solomon Islands in the 2009 event.

Fiji Football Association five-a-side commission secretary Jainendra Sukhu said the parent body had roped in former Australia five-a-side coach Scott Gilligan to help the national side.

He said Gilligan, the Oceania Football Confederation Futsal development officer, would also be carrying out Level Two Futsal coaching courses in the country.

"Scott will be arriving this Sunday," Sukhu said. "He is coming for two purposes, firstly to conduct the Futsal Level two coaching course and secondly to assist us in the trials to select the national squad for the OFC championship.

"With his vast experience, he will be working closely with us in identifying players that are capable of representing Fiji at the championship."

Gilligan will be conducting the coaching course from January 19 at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
