NINE evacuation centres were activated yesterday afternoon.

Acting director of National Disaster Management Office, Patiliai Dobui said three centres were activated in Ra, five in Navua and one in the province of Bua.

The centres in Ra are the George Shiu Raj Building, Rakiraki Muslim Primary School and a community hall.

Goerge Shiu Raj Building was sheltering 10 people from Qelema, the school had 40 people from Nadugu and the community hall had eight people.

The three centres in Rakiraki were activated before midday.

Mr Dobui said five evacuation centres in Navua did not have any occupants as of yesterday afternoon.

The evacuation centres for Navua included the LDS church, Vashist Muni Primary School, Serua Provincial Office, Rampur College and Jokhan Primary School.

He said they were urging people to go to the evacuation centres while it was still light.

Mr Dobui said they were calling on people staying in squatter settlements and areas near rivers to move to the evacuation centres.

He said they received reports of people fleeing from their homes.

Principal disaster management officer Aisea Quminakelo said it was important that people in areas likely to be hard-hitcontact their respective district officers and provincial administrators for evacuation instructions.
