THE Ministry of Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation got an increase budget of $6million over last year.
The ministry's allocation is $33.9 million for 2010.
The Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation Ministry head, Dr Jiko Luveni, said she was happy with the amount.
"One of our key areas is poverty alleviation and we have got an increased allocation for that," she said.
Dr Luveni said the ministry would work hard to alleviate poverty in the country.
The 2010 Budget announcement also saw in a new policy to allocate more personnel to the poverty alleviation unit.
They will be organised to be an effective processing and distribution team who will also collate reliable data to implement targeted assistance.
It was also revealed that poverty alleviation programs will focus on mobilising adequate resources to core priority sectors of health, housing, and infrastructure development and underdeveloped areas.
The aggregate budget for poverty alleviation programs in 2010 has increased by more than $9 million in comparison to 2009. Rural outer island development programmes were also increased by approximately $13million.
