Ella's wary

FIJI will have to outsmart the Romanians when they clash to mark the 75th anniversary of rugby's arrival in this Eastern Europe nation, next weekend.

Head coach Glen Ella is already wary of the damage the Romanians can inflict on the Fijians, who would definitely be relatively "smaller" than their hosts.

"Romania have massive forwards," Ella said in Dublin on Saturday.

They're not as skillful as our guys but they are very strong, big people.

'With the Wallabies, I played with them a couple of times and they scared the daylights out of me.

'So I think we'll really have to play smart. We'll just have to run them around so they won't be able to catch us."

It is no secret that teams that have played against Romania return "bruised and battered" but this can only be good for the players, Ella reckons.

"So we'll have to really go hard but this is why they are playing Ireland, Scotland -- they need to put themselves up against the players of the world.

"Romania is just going to be a different game, very physical."

On a general note, Ella feels the dynamics between the local and overseas-based players has been very good.

'The good thing for the local players is that it gives them an insight on where they should be," Ella said.

"We are really struggling with our lineout throws, lifting and all that.

"We are miles behind the speed where we should be so these are things we need to take back.

"We need to bring the players who are here and also the players back home up the level all the players up to that level as well."

Fiji and Romania have only played once before and the Oaks beat the Flying Fijians 17-15 at the 1991 Rugby World Cup in France.

Saturday's game is at 4pm (Fiji Time) at the Arcul de Triumf Stadium in Bucharest.
