Drug arrest
A 47-YEAR-OLD man was arrested and questioned by the Police Drug Unit after 35 packs of dried leaves believed to be marijuana were found in his bag. The man was searched after he was reported to have been acting suspiciously on Friday. Assistant police spokesman Sergeant Atunaisa Sokomuri said the man was taken in and questioned. The samples of the dried leaves have been sent to the Koronivia Research Station for further analysis.
Murder probe
POLICE are still investigating the death of pre-school teacher Rajeshni Sharma whose body was found at her home in Howell Road, Suva, on Tuesday afternoon. Deputy Director Police Operations SP Erami Raibe said they had some leads into the case and charges were expected to be made. Meanwhile a team of investigators was sent to the west to get more information on the 35-year-old victim. Police said she was strangled to death. Meanwhile, no arrest has been made in the killing of a mother who was strangled and burnt at Toorak in Suva.
First flight
AIR Kiribati's inaugural flight from Tarawa to Nadi touched down yesterday with 45 passengers and crew on board. The airline has contracted Our Airline services to provide a weekly service from Tarawa to Nadi and return to Tarawa. Airports Fiji Limited staff and management along with Air Terminal Services ground handling staff welcomed the aircraft at the Nadi Airport.
Attempted rape
LAUTOKA police are questioning a man after he was alleged to have attempted to rape a student. Assistant police spokesman Sergeant Atunaisa Sokomuri said the incident occurred on November 3 and the victim knew the accused. He said the accused had taken the victim to an isolated place and attempted to rape her but she managed to escape and report the matter to police.
NFA relocation
THE National Fire Authority is discussing plans to relocate its headquarter from Walu Bay in Suva. Corporate affairs officer Mileta Ting said no decision has been made. The plan to relocate NFA was discussed during a risk management plan in Suva after the tsunami alert following the devastation of the tsunami that struck Samoa.
Home fundraising
A FUNDRAISING event was organised by Soroptmists International Lautoka and the Fiji Institute of Technology at the Raiwai campus last night to collect funds for the Golden Age Home. The event included a cultural and fashion show which was attended by invited guests and members of the public. Money raised from the show will be used in the refurbishment of the Natabua Golden Age Home kitchen and dining facilities.
Awards speaker
JAPAN'S renowned public speaker on public administration and governance, Professor Akira Nakamura, is expected to speak to permanent secretaries and senior civil servants on how to improve service delivery in the civil service. Prof Nakamura is in the country as a guest speaker for the civil service excellence awards event scheduled to be held on November 27 in Suva.
