Update: 1:29PM FULL diplomatic ties with Australia and New Zealand will be restored, if those countries wish to do so, after democratic elections in 2014.
Legend FM quoted army commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama as taking the stance this morning.
"Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has today stressed that Fiji can re-engage in dialogue and restore full diplomatic ties with New Zealand and Australia if they want to re-engage only after democratic elections," it said.
It quoted Commodore Bainimarama as saying this would mean that re-engagement and dialogue with the two countries would take place after Fiji had elections in 2014.
This after the Australian and New Zealand heads of mission in Fiji were given 24 hours to leave the country on Tuesday night. Fiji's heads of missions in Australia and New Zealand were yesterday also declared persona non grata, and told to return.
The Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd confirmed this morning that the country had travel sanctions that applied post December 2006.
Mr Rudd is the current chair of the Pacific Island Forum.
