TRANSPARENCY International Fiji has questioned the motive of overseas governments in placing travel sanctions on members of the judiciary and their families.
In a statement released earlier this week, TI Fiji chairperson Dave Aidney said the travel bans were affecting the calibre of judges Fiji was able to attract, which at the end of the day would affect the level of services provided by the judiciary.
"We support the Chief Justice's call in asking that travel bans pertaining to members of Fiji's judiciary and their families should end," he said.
Mr Aidney said they believed Fiji must have an effective judiciary, which is allowed to operate independently and free of outside interference.
"Fiji has enough challenges to handle in our endeavours to get our economy back on its feet and we must do everything to help raise the level of confidence in society and business community," he said.
Mr Aidney said an effective and independent judiciary would go a long way to help with the cause and that's why they wanted to ask Australia and New Zealand to reconsider their travel bans.
