THE Social Welfare Department has cautioned non-government organisations responsible for building homes for the recipients of their family assistance allowance that they will be reported to the police if they fail to build the houses.
Divisional Social Welfare officer Aporosa Kaloucava said they were aware of a case in the Yasawa group of islands where a NGO did not build the home of a widow after sending all the acquittals to the department.
Mr Kaloucava said during the Ba Provincial Council meeting yesterday that the mata ni tikina (district rep) concerned should look into the issue.
"We have considered lodging the matter with police but decided not to for the time being."
He said they had raised the matter at the meeting so that the tikina representatives would address the issue.
"This is a very serious matter which needed to be addressed."
Mr Kaloucava said they had given the NGO $5000 for the construction of the house.
He said that upon inspection, they found out that only the foundation of the house had been constructed.
"There was no house built."
He said the widow was not at fault.
"The NGO is responsible and should answer to it."
