Eat smart, keep fit

Ruby Taylor-Newton

'Weight training sessions once or twice a week,

Cardios ("your huffy, puffy exercises") - at least three days a week and cut down on your fats and sugars!'

That's the word from Metro Gym Personal fitness trainer and Level One Yoga teacher Nicole "Nikki" Burnett.

Nikki says if you want to get rid of unwanted fat, exercise and proper food control will get you results fast.

"Try and eat things that are the least tampered with, stuff from the ground - nothing in wrappers!" she says.

She swears by weights - dumbbells and barbells, and exercises that get your heart pumping fast like brisk walking or aerobics, and eating healthy - less sugary stuff and more vegetables, salads and fruits. And, drink lots and lots of water!

All the way from the Gold Coast in Australia, Nikki is a graduate from the Australian Institute of Fitness - AIF - and holds Certificate 3 and 4 in Fitness.

She's also a Level 1 Yoga Teacher after completing her 200 hours for a Yoga Certificate at Trinity Yoga.

With her credentials, Nikki is well qualified to be a gym instructor and personal fitness trainer - something she loves doing at the Metro Fitness gym in Suva almost daily, from boot camps to circuit classes and one-on-one training sessions.

"It's not a job really," she laughs?"be cause I get to come in, work with people, chat to amazing people and get people fit and healthy. That's the most important thing," she says.

Nikki says she's motivated by seeing people achieve their health and fitness goals through her expertise.

"Seeing people from when they first walk into the gym, hardly having any confidence and then flowering into these amazing people that just have so much confidence and feel so good about themselves - that's the most rewarding part," she says.

With so much opportunity to get fit around, Nikki advises that people find access to as much healthy eating information as possible. This is the key to losing weight, getting fit and staying fit, she says.
