Awareness campaign

Saturday, October 03, 2009

THE Department of Mineral Resources carries out community awareness programs on natural disasters and evacuation procedures every year.

Department seismologist Sefanaia Seru said slide presentations and discussions with community on evacuation routes are some of the activities carried out during the awareness program.

"The program is usually carried out around coastal islands and coastal communities in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu," he said.

"Some schools also visit our main office to learn more about disasters and its impact.

"During our visits to coastal communities, we engage with them on discussion proposing evacuation routes they could take in case of a natural disaster or tsunami."
