CHILDREN of struggling sugar cane farmers in the Lautoka area can be rest assured that help will come their way next year after the National Farmers Union raised $38,000 during its week-long carnival.
Miss Saweni Sector Ashika Arti Reddy was crowned Miss Farmers and Miss Lovu Sector was named Miss Charity.
Although $2000 short of the target, festival founder Udit Narayan said the money would be used on school fees and stationery for underprivileged students.
Mr Narayan said that come January, the union was ready to set out on its charitable course.
Given the tough economic situation and numerous job losses, Mr Narayan said there was a good turnout from the public.
"I would like to thank the general public, the stall holders and the sponsors for the success of this carnival," he said.
"We have been able to achieve our goal without securing funds from any major sponsor."
Mr Narayan said he looked forward to their continued support in next year's carnival.
