Be wary of public events

Saturday, July 04, 2009

ORGANISERS of public events will need to follow certain measures in order to minimise the risk of spreading the pandemic virus, says the Health Ministry.

And if a high risk is detected, events will either be postponed or halted.

Health officials are already designing guidelines and arranging awareness meets for organisers.

A major upcoming event is the Pacific Youth Festival.

Acting deputy secretary for Health Dr Josaia Samuela said plans were already under way to meet with events organisers "and inform them of contingency arrangements in terms of preparedness, H1N1 awareness and precautions".

Health spokesman Iliesa Tora said if the national pandemic task force receives evidence that there might be a risk in holding public gatherings in some of the centres, "then we will ff course advise for the event to be cancelled or postponed to another date.

We do not want to get into a situation that can drain our healthcare system.

"The Ministry of Health is working around the clock to ensure that our resources are available for the worse case scenario."
