Fiji reports sixth H1N1 case

Friday, June 26, 2009

Update: 3:02PM ANOTHER case of the pandemic H1N1 virus has been confirmed, taking Fiji's total number of confirmed cases to six.

This was confirmed by Fiji's chief adviser for communicable disease, Dr Eric Rafai, today.

The case is not related to the earlier confirmed cases in the sense that the person, who lives in the Western Division, was not directly associated with the first five cases, he explained.

Spread of the virus, which is more contagious than the common flu, was expected by Health authorities who are working with all stakeholders on containing it.

Yesterday, three cases were confirmed. One case was confirmed in Suva, one in Lautoka and the third was in Nadi. Two of these cases had a history of recent travel.

State officials are working relentlessly to trace those who have come in contact with the latest cases, who are being treated at their respective homes.

"Close contacts are those who would have shaken hands, kissed or hugged any of the confirmed cases or sat in the same room for more than 15 minutes at less than 1 metre," said the ministry.

"These individuals or groups are at risk of contracting the virus if the person confirmed as having Pandemic H1N1 2009 virus was having respiratory symptoms at that time e.g. cough, running nose or a sore throat with high fever."
