THE signs of a developing El Nino have strengthened in the past two weeks, says Meteorology Department director Rajendra Prasad.
As of June 17, Mr Prasad said rainfall was well below average at all observation sites, except Rotuma and Ono-i-Lau.
He said maximum and minimum air temperatures were below average to average.
"Nadi airport has received three millimetres or 5 per cent of normal rainfall, Suva 13mm or 8 per cent of normal rainfall, Labasa airport zero rainfall and Monasavu 41mm or 16 per cent of normal rainfall," he said.
"At Navua and the Nadi and Nausori airports, maximum temperature has been one degree Celsius or more below the June long-term average.
"The Navua, Nadi and Nausori airports' lowest maximum temperature records of 22 degrees C, 22.4 degrees C and 21.7 degrees C respectively remain unbroken.
"Likewise for minimum temperatures at Savusavu airport, Lakeba and Levuka which were one degree C or more below the June long-term average. During El Niño, a stronger than normal and cooler than normal wind flow from the south is usual except in the middle of the wet season."
