Pushpa shall not be moved

By Sheetal Singh

PUSHPA Karan has come a long way in her struggle to be treated like a normal person.

Despite being blind, Ms Karan is employed as a customer service assistant and receptionist at the Westpac Bank in Lautoka.

Not wanting to be outdone by those around her, she wants to be treated like a normal person in her workplace and in her personal life.

She joined the bank in 1986 and since then has improved at her work

Customer Service manager Margaret O'Connor said Ms Karan had excellent telephone etiquette and was involved with team work at the branch.

"She prefers to be involved with what the team is going through," said Ms O'Connor about her.

"She has email access and works through a system designed to make her work easier for her," said Ms O'Connor.

"There is no discrimination in our organisation and Pushpa prefers to be treated equally like a normal employee in our branch."

Ms Karan is an inspiration to other disabled persons.

She is also a professional singer with the Dostana Music Orchestra in Lautoka.

"I had to struggle to be treated like a normal person," she said.
