HELPING the needy has been part of Ajay Kumar's life. It is something he volunteers to do.
He now provides his services to the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises N Development (FRIEND).
Mr Kumar said he joined the non-government organisation last year. He was one of the volunteers distributing food to people affected by the flood in January.
He has a shop and has been serving people at the grassroots level.
He is president of the Sanatan Dharam branch in Nadi and has been involved with community work.
He lives with his wife at Wailoaloa in Nadi and they have four children who are overseas.
"I try to encourage people to move to farming, be it on a small scale or large scale.
"People can earn a lot from farming and also keep their health on par," he said.
"Mr Kumar owns a half-acre farm and plants sugarcane, corn and vegetables.
He believes in changing the world one life at a time and said he was touched when he saw and read about people who lost all their belongings in the floods.
He said what he saw made him become a volunteer to help those in distress.
"I became actively involved after the floods in 2008.
"I was contacted by the advisory council to escort the NGO officials around to survey the areas which were heavily affected by the flood," he said.
"I saw the devastation caused by the flood and I wanted to volunteer as much of my time with the NGO in helping the people."
