HE'S young, smart and super energetic in all he does. Fifteen-year-old Ashneel Jaynesh Prasad's enthusiasm and dedication at school, home and in his social life is a marvel to those around him.
He's the shining star of his school and a true community helper, which makes him a natural nominee for the Pride of Fiji medal.
For Ashneel though, it's all about energy. "Everybody knows I can't sit quietly in one place and I have to be busy. I like to explore things beyond my imagination," he said. "Life is all about exploring and discovering. I don't want to waste any time losing out on doing something constructive."
The Form Five student of Tilak High School believes in grabbing every opportunity life throws him.
This has seen his name on the school list for oratory, debate, quizzes and concerts, all of which he is proud of.
If that's not enough, Ashneel is also in the editorial team of the school's sports newspaper. Competition is something he finds challenging, looking forward to it with excitement. Ashneel's belief is that one should never underestimate their opponent as being weak.
Being a healthy, active teenager is great, but what really makes Ashneel stand out is his caring nature - something which has driven him to volunteer for the Junior Red Cross Society in Lautoka for the past five years. When asked why he does it, Ashneel - who is secretary of the society - simply said he enjoys helping people.
"Most of the people don't know about the Junior Red Cross or do not think that we can make a significant change in society. I want everyone to know that we are here to help people and if you come to us for help, we will never say no.
"As a volunteer my first priority is to see that we can help as many people as possible. Be prepared for any kind of situation is what we are taught and what I believe in," he said confidently. Ashneel wants to become a teacher some day.
"I love talking, that is one thing, but more importantly I like sharing my knowledge with others. What is the use if you learn so much and can't share it with anyone? If you don't share with anyone and die someday then your knowledge will also die with you."
His confidence in all he does, he says, is what keeps him going. "If I lose my confidence, I know I will stay behind in life."
Ashneel is also grateful to his friends, teachers and family for their support.
"It inspires me and pushes me further to go out and do what I am passionate about. I do everything I can because at the end of the day, it makes me feel like I have moved one step ahead in life and have done something worthwhile for my community and the people."
Ashneel, from Kashmir in Lautoka, values his parents the most in life.
"If you don't respect and value your parents in life, then you have nothing in life," he said.
"I actually admire my parents for being both soft and hard with me because it helps me become a better person in life."
Never lose hope is his advice to all the youths. "If you lose hope, you are gone".
