Deaf association committed to members

Friday, May 22, 2009

Fiji Association of the Deaf is an admirable and committed organisation that stands for the plight of its members.

The association is a self-help group run by the deaf, for the deaf. It was formed in 2002 and is the only deaf association in Fiji. Association spokesperson Gael Seru said their vision was to have a strong, properly organised and well-equipped association that advocates deafness and for deaf people to be recognised as equal.

Ms Seru said they also worked to empower and educate deaf people for self-determination and self-reliance.

"FAD aims to provide people who are deaf with opportunities so that they can live as equal members in the society," he said.

It also helps deaf people to gain independence and the ability to advocate for their own needs," she said.

FAD has two associations under its banner-central eastern association of the deaf and western association of the deaf.

It is an affiliate of Fiji Disabled People's Association which is also a national self-helped group.

FAD is also a member of the World Federation of the Deaf.
