She is a fighter and someone who feels for issues affecting women today.
Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls is a hard-working, caring and compassionate woman who goes the extra mile to ensure women get what they deserve.
Sharon is the founding co-ordinator of femLINKPACIFIC, a non-government organisation that aims to promote women's equality and empowerment through community and media initiatives. Her work involves linking women in rural communities in Ba, Nadi, Labasa, Savusavu and Nausori with the policy level.
She travels and meets women in local communities but is mainly based at the community media centre in Suva where they operate weekend community radio broadcasts for rural and regional women's community media network.
"This is a somewhat rewarding challenge as we working to enable young women to develop and produce radio programs which they feel reflect critical issues and concerns," says Sharon.
At another level, she is also responsible for policy advocacy and networking and that involves linking femLINKPACIFIC work with national, regional and international partners and networks.
Sharon is the second vice president of the National Council of Women.
Her work in broadcasting and involvement with the women's movement goes back to 1986 when she joined YWCA and started working in radio.
She was always looking for a way to merge the two and it happened in 2000 when femLINKPACIFIC evolved from the Blue Ribbon peace vigil. She felt it was her opportunity to tell the untold stories of what women were doing and contributing to society.
"I always had the feeling there is more that could be achieved through public service or non-profit media especially to provide women more space to relate their issues and opinions," she said.
