When men talk

By GERALDINE PANAPASA

It has become a nationwide conference that has captured the attention of many and its growing popularity includes the participation of public figures like France-based rugby winger Filimoni Delasau, former national rugby 15s skipper Ro Alifereti Doviverata and Navy Commander, Francis Kean.

The 'Be A Man' conference started two years ago by the New Methodist Christian Fellowship and aims to bring men from all walks of life together to share experiences and faith.

General superintendent of the NCF Atu Vulaono said the two-day conference at the National Gymnasium ended yesterday and more than 2000 men turned out for the annual event.

Senior pastor Vulaono said the forum and discussions were based on principals of the Bible.

He said the conference was generally aimed at men but was also applicable to women who held similar responsibilities as men in the household and community.

"The target group for this conference is men because men are leaders of the household, community and village," Mr Vulaono said.

"According to the Bible, man is the head of the family and they shoulder a lot of responsibility.

"This conference is to help them be firm and wise in their role as leaders, give them the knowledge, guidance and intelligence to make good decisions.

"If they have a good understanding of the future then they can make good decisions now."

Mr Vulaono said male figures in the Bible including Noah, Abraham and Moses are good examples of Godly men he hopes would inspire those at the conference.

He said the global crisis affecting the world, broken marriages and relationships, and unwanted pregnancies are some of the problems faced by many people.

The conference would help men and women become responsible in their roles as members of the family, community and society.

Mr Vulaono said the conference would enlighten men on the need to treasure Godly values.

"No one is perfect and this is the reason we started the conference two years ago. This is a forum where men get together to unravel the truth of our surrounding problems," Mr Vulaono said.

"Problems from child rebelliousness, divorces, finance and the global economic recession are some of the issues that were discussed.

"It is also a soul seeking opportunity for men of valor to reach out to fellow men in Fiji and abroad in search of answers to the problems crippling the leadership roles of men in families, community and the nation.

"Some prominent men have testified of the awesomeness of God's hand at work in their lives.

"This conference targets men who are facing marital, financial, social, spiritual and economical difficulties.

"It proposes that Jesus is the answer to their problems."

The first 'Be A Man' conference was held in Nadi in 2007 with a gathering of about 100 men from NCF.

Mr Vulaono said the number increased tenfold to 1500 participants at the conference last year.

He said inviting prominent figures in society to share their life experiences and spirituality with the hundreds that turned up was for people to see how powerful the word of God is.

Mr Vulaono said Delasau flew in from France especially for the conference.

Even as the main speaker for the conference, Mr Vulaono said it was a challenge to speak alongside prominent men but at the end of the day, all they relied on for a positive outcome was their faith.

"I'm talking to men holding higher positions than I am, earning more than I am but together we can reach out to other men to be humble in their lives," Mr Vulaono said.

"The conference would enlighten men to be equipped with God's word and to rise up to save their families, community and the nation.

"It takes a real man to be a man."

Mr Vulaono said about $30,000 was used to fund the conference which will be an annual event usually held at the end of April.

A similar program for women called Women in Faith has been organized by NCF for November.

NCF currently has 68 churches established between the Nausori - Naboro corridor.
