Blitz on kava centres

Monday, April 20, 2009

NADI police have been closing yaqona and billiard shops early but the shopowners say this is bad for business.

Tanisha's Kava World shop owner Amrit Lal said for the past week the police have been closing his shop and other kava shops.

Mr Lal said billiard shops have not been spared - they've also been forced to close early.

"We have been ordered to close around 5pm and open around 8am," he said.

"We are losing out on business because many working people flock to the kava shops for a bowl or two to unwind after a long working day.

Assistant police spokesperson Sergeant Atunaisa Sokomuri said they've been cracking down on businesses that stay open past their operating hours.

Mr Sokomuri said businesses should operate within their specified operating hours.

"These billiard and kava shops are seen as hangouts for young people who should be at home - that's why the police are cracking down on these places."
