President's deputy sworn in

Update: 10:34AM FORMER military commander and Speaker of the House of Representatives Ratu Epeli Nailatikau was sworn in as vice-president today.

In a brief ceremony at Government House slightly after 10am, Ratu Epeli took the Oath of Allegiance.

The appointment follows the gazetting of the eighth decree made under the new legal order.

The decree, entitled the 'Vice-President and Succession Decree 2009', was signed by Head of State Ratu Josefa Iloilo yesterday.

Ratu Epeli is also the minister for Indigenous Affairs, Provincial Development and Multi Ethnic Affairs in the caretaker government of military commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

He is married to Adi Koila Mara, the daughter of Fiji's first prime minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
