Tsunami warning for Fiji

Update: 8:10AM A tsunami warning has been issued after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck early this morning about 209kilometres from Tonga and 400kilometres from Fiji.

The warning was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre for all coastal areas of the South Pacific islands near Tonga after sea level readings confirmed that a tsunami was generated.

It is expected to strike along the coast of Fiji shortly after 8am as a result of the quake which had a reported depth of 10 kilometres.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami," said the Centre.
