A dumb move: Beddoes

Thursday, December 25, 2008

THE expulsion of acting New Zealand High Commissioner Caroline McDonald has been described as lialia and dumb.

Ousted Opposition Leader Mick Beddoes said "it was also an embarrassing admission by Fiji, that the government of the day has absolutely no idea how to conduct international relations and they look more like a bunch of confused and stressed out cowboys who are so paranoid that they have started shooting at anything that moves".

"They seriously don't know from one minute to the next what they are doing and soon, even their staunchest supporters, will have to start questioning their acute lack of ability."

Mr Beddoes predicted the fallout from the world credit and cash crisis would hit Fiji sometime next year.

"Thousands of our people will be affected in many ways and those already living below the poverty line will be hit even harder than they have been, businesses will collapse, people will become unemployed and generally things will get a lot worse than they have been to date," he said.

"Fiji's ability to fend off this looming financial tsunami is being compromised by the deliberate delay in restoring parliamentary democracy, accountable government and transparency by this incompetent, budget busting military junta and their inability to properly and professionally handle their issues with New Zealand and Australia are a clear indication of how they handle the day to day management of our country which is chaotic at best," said Mr Beddoes.
