THERE has been a lack of concern over the years in waste management in our society, says interim Provincial Development Minister Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
He said this, coupled with the failure to understand the co-existence of the environment and its relationship to people's lives, has led to loss of common interests.
He said while the reported cases had directly reflected the poor waste management, the Government was formulating key figures of waste water management and pollution control on all businesses together with stakeholders to address a common area.
Ratu Epeli made the comments while opening the Biolytic Decentra-lization Sewerage consultative workshop Lautoka yesterday.
He emphasised the importance of sharing information effectively and efficiently to achieve a tangible outcome at the end of the consultation. He said the arrival of Biolytic Wastewater Treatment System was timely considering how the disposal of waste water played an important role in everyone's daily lives in the urban and rural areas.
"This water waste system is a cross pollination of knowledge and technology to a much high quality of environment-free platform and high efficient decomposition of waste observed with understood importance," he said.
"Varieties of fish in our harbour have wonders of waste baggage, water waste and metal and oil waste from industrial companies accompany hazardous when development takes place, other than that waste water discharge take place in any harbour/port of call for the country, disturbing the virginity pristine of our waters.
"It is a disgrace and it is not advisable to fish or collect sea food and sea shells in these areas."
