A 58-YEAR-old taxi driver died instantly following a head on collision on Wednesday night.A 23-year-old school teacher is currently in police custody being interrogated about the incident.
Divisional traffic officer Western, Assistant Superintendent Richard Raju said the accident took place at Loloma, Vatukoula at about 9.30pm.
ASP Raju said the school teacher was heading towards Tavua when he lost control of his vehicle, DR 978.
Failing to negotiate a bend, the suspect's vehicle alleged went onto the wrong side of the road and collided into the deceased's vehicle, LH 323.
ASP Raju said despite numerous warnings and pleas by relevant authorities, drivers continue to drive carelessly.
He pleaded for the public's co-operation with the force's efforts in promoting road safety.
"A school teacher is involved in this accident that has cost a life."
"With everyone preaching about road safety, people continue to neglect the advice and road laws," said ASP Raju.
ASP Raju said the force had already started its festive season operations.
He warned drivers that anyone found breaching the road rules would be taken to task.
ASP Raju said they were trying their best to ensure this festive season was tragedy-free but they needed the public's cooperation.
