Winning something for his partially blind dad with hearing disability was described as the best moment of his life by a 14-year-old student.
Eddie Mitchell was the 'Dad of the Year' in a Father's Day promotion run by The Fiji Times in conjunction with Tappoo and Sonaisali Island Resort. The competition ran for four weeks.
There were 10 finalists.
Carney Mitchell, a Class Six student, said he had no money to buy a present for his dad and taking part in the competition was his only hope.
"I wanted to do something special for dad but I didn't have any money so when I saw the advertisement in The Fiji Times, I went for it and told my dad to drop it in at Tappoo. I am proud to have won something for dad. It is the first time I won something for him and I am very happy about it.
His dad said he was thrilled when on Sunday morning the shopkeeper told him that his picture was in the paper.
"I didn't know the boy was so observant. He asked me to drop his form and to promise him not to open it, so i did as he said. He has made me proud.
"I am their mother and father both so we had a big feast at home on Sunday and I cooked for the boys."
Carney lives with his dad and 10-year-old brother Justin in Nakasi.
The family received a $1000 Tappoo shopping voucher and will get a weekend away at Sonaisali Island Resort.
"I will be buying phones and cameras for dad and me," said Carney with a smile.
