SPTO rewards staff for green posts

Update: 12:20PM TWO employees of a regional tourism promotion agency were rewarded today for using their personal social media space to promote the organisation’s work.

The South Pacific Tourism Organisation’s administration staff, Fane Dinono and Mabel Velia, each won a resort stay and spa treatment at the end of a three-month social media campaign.

In a statement issued today, SPTO said the campaign was aimed at raising awareness about the importance of sustainable tourism to its staff.

“Over the months of September to December 2017, staff of the regional organisation mandated to market and develop tourism in the Pacific were required to upload posts on their personal social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etcetera, with messages on the theme ‘Sustainable tourism as a tool for development to benefit the Pacific’,” the statement said.

A Green Committee within the organisation developed and rated the quality of posts and awarded Ms Dinono for seven posts that generated 182 Likes and “attracted a good number of comments”.

She won a weekend for two at the Leleuvia Island Resort.

Ms Velia’s winning post highlighted the role of marine protected areas and she gets a spa treament at U-Sabai Thai Traditional Spa & Massage.

SPTO chief executive Christopher Cocker is quoted as being “pleasantly surprised by the depth of knowledge on sustainable tourism matters and its importance” among his administrative staff.

“Sustainable tourism development is an important area of SPTO’s work program and it is encouraging to see the high interest of staff in this space as we all play a key role in sharing the message of sustainability,” Mr Cocker said.
