HONIARA, 11 JUNE 2018 (SOLOMON STAR) — Solomon Islands Governor General Sir Frank Kabui has made a remarkable and bold statement about the position of the country on the issue of ‘same sex marriage’ while addressing leaders, diplomatic corps and the public, during the Queen’s birthday celebration in Honiara, Friday.

His speech came at the right time when same sex marriage is legalised in Australia and New Zealand, Solomon Islands two major donor partners.

Australia becomes the 25th country to recognise same-sex marriage.

“Solomon Islands, the question for us is whether or not we will continue to maintain our current position or instead change our position and be like others, the issue of same sex marriage is coming and we ought to prepare ourselves to deal with it.

“Let me make it clear, that being gay or homosexual is not the issue, people of this description is everywhere in our societies, it is as old as humanity itself.

“It is not wrong to born with gay or lesbian inclination, it is said to be biological and is beyond individual control.

“Be that as it may, there is however a choice either practicing it or not with another person of same sex is a matter of choice, practicing it in private or openly when universal acceptance is therefore the issue today,” Sir Kabui boldly said on Friday.

This issue after many years did reach the corridors of United Nation in 1995, since then various resolution and statements have been made in the UN on the issue, it had become part of the UN agenda since.

The momentum is being pushed rapidly at that level throughout the world; however there is no consensus on the issue at the UN.

In 2011, Solomon Islands among others have expressed its opposition at the United Nations, at home the former Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare in his speech to a church group in 2017 opposed Same Sex Marriage.

Sir Kabui warned the leaders that the issue of same sex marriage is coming and we ought to prepare ourselves to deal with it, the gay and lesbian advocates for same sex marriage are perhaps expecting the others to do the same.

“Some countries are resisting including Solomon Islands, there is now a move in some countries to introduce gay and lesbian rights, in schools by teaching young people to recognise and appreciate the rights of this minority groups in society.

“We have to be mindful of this silent strategies creeping into our societies under the cover of legitimate activities,” he added.

“As I have said, these people are rich and are funding their agenda throughout the world wanting to change the world, they are destroying the family unit in societies; they are turning it upside down.

“Our challenge is to continue to remain steadfast against this onslaught, the international gay and lesbian advocates are steadfastly chipping at the edges with the hope that they change the world and accept same sex marriage,” Sir Kabui further stated.

Few months ago, British Prime Minister, Theresa May called for same-sex marriage in Nigeria and all other countries within the Commonwealth which Solomon Islands is part of it.

May said she understood that most of the laws against same-sex marriage in the Commonwealth nations were made by the UK, arguing that “those laws were wrong then, and are wrong now.”

But Sir Frank Kabui in his bold statement said, “Our present criminal law or panel code is against same sex marriage, Sections 160, 161, 162 of our panel code are the relevant prohibitions against same sex marriage and associated conduct.”

“To be specific Genesis 2 verse 24, Leviticus 18:22, Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6: 9, 7:2-16, and Ephesians 5:23-33 these are the scriptures that form the foundation of our law on this issue.

Sir Kabui affirmed that this is Solomon Islands position in the issue, and it is based upon the Holy Bible.
