THE 21-year-old marine protected area of the Navakavu tribe is under threat after a fishing vessel ran aground on their reef last Saturday.

Villagers of Waiqanake, which is outside Lami Town, say the incident is a threat because all their efforts to conserve and protect their marine ecosystem for the past 21 years may just all go to waste if there is an oil spill.

On board the ship were two Asian nationals.

One who identified himself as a Chinese national — Sun Giang — said he was the captain of the ship.

With limited English, Mr Sun said he had been sailing to Fiji for three years.
